The year 2013 will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Bihar School of Yoga and the vision of yoga which was propagated by Sri Swami Satyananda.

Bihar School of Yoga is a worldwide recognized and respected yoga training institution of the highest standard. Established at Munger in 1963 by Sri Swami Satyananda, since its inception it has been dedicated to the propagation of classical integral yoga. In January 1964 in his first public conference in Munger Sri Swami Satyananda declared:

“Munger will become the centre of yoga for the whole world and it will find a place on the world map.”

- Sri Swami Satyananda

Today, though it emerged from a small town in the rural area of the state of Bihar in India, the Bihar School of Yoga is internationally recognized as a reputed and authentic centre for learning yoga and the spiritual sciences.

The inspiration for the Bihar School of Yoga emanates from a lineage of masters whose concern was not only individual spiritual development, but also the integrated development of human society. They foresaw that through its principles and practices yoga would definitely contribute to the betterment of health, wellbeing and daily life, as well as to the evolution of consciousness.

Sri Swami Satyananda realized that the immediate spiritual need of people was not scriptural knowledge but rather practical, simple and applicable yoga. He foresaw that yoga would address the needs of modern life on all levels – the physical, mental, emotional, psychic and spiritual – to improve the quality of life. Following the mandate of his guru, Sri Swami Sivananda, Sri Swami Satyananda worked tirelessly to discover and revive the ancient science of yoga. Through Bihar School of Yoga he disseminated and propagated yoga throughout the four corners of the world, from door to door and from shore to shore.

“So far as I am concerned, I live for yoga and I think of nothing but yoga, and I am very clear in my thinking. I know that yoga is going to be the mighty culture, not only of the East or West but of the whole of mankind. Yoga is the light, no matter where the darkness is.”

- Sri Swami Satyananda
